RN Merja Wilson graduated in 1980 and embarked on a diverse nursing career. After completing her nursing qualification, Merja volunteered with the Institute of Medical Research in Papua New Guinea (PNG), working across various regions. During this period, she also worked for Nganampa Health in Central Australia to earn money to return to PNG. In 1985, Merja completed her midwifery training.
Merja trained as a Children’s Intensive Care Nurse and worked in Children’s Neurology before arriving on Lord Howe Island in 1987, upon the recommendation of a friend. She developed a deep affinity for the place.
Throughout her 45-year nursing career, Merja’s passion has been patients’ safety. Merja has gained experience in all areas of nursing. Her dedication to nursing led her away from the island multiple times. Her most recent 17-year tenure in Canberra marked the pinnacle of her career. There, she worked in ICU, CCU, ED, medical and surgical wards. She became a Breast Care Nurse, transitioned to management as a Clinical Nurse Consultant (CNC) working in a Medical Ward. She was handpicked to opened and run the first Medical Assessment & Planning Unit, in Canberra. Soon after she advanced to the role of Assistant Director of Nursing (ADON) at a private hospital, later moving to The Canberra Hospital as ADON before retiring in 2018.
Merja returned to LHI in 2019 and subsequently began another phase of her nursing career, predominantly working part-time within the community. She considers it an honour to once again provide care for her small community.
